How much does a website cost in India?
What decides the cost of a business website in India, which running costs to budget for, and how to compare quotes without paying for things you don't need.

Ask five agencies what a website costs and you will get five very different numbers. That is not because someone is cheating you. It is because "a website" can mean anything from a single page with a WhatsApp button to a custom platform with bookings, payments and a members' area.
This guide explains what actually drives the price, so you can compare quotes properly and spend only on what your business needs.
The five things that decide the price
1. How many pages, and how different they are
A five-page site where every page follows the same layout is a small job. A site with separate pages for each service, location and industry, each with its own design, takes much longer. Count the pages you really need, not the ones that would be nice to have.
2. Features beyond "read and contact us"
Every feature adds design, development and testing time. Common ones:
- Online payments or an online store
- Appointment or table booking
- Calculators, quote builders or product configurators
- Customer logins or dashboards
- Multiple languages
- Connections to your CRM, billing or inventory software
3. Template, theme or custom design
A good theme adjusted to your brand is quicker and cheaper. A fully custom design costs more but fits your content exactly and can be faster and more distinctive. Neither is wrong; it depends on how much your website needs to stand apart from competitors.
4. Who creates the content
Words, photos and videos are often the slowest part of a website project. If you supply finished text and good photos, the job is simpler. If the agency writes the copy, shoots the photos or makes a video, that is extra work, but it usually makes the biggest difference to whether the site brings in enquiries.
5. SEO and speed from day one
A site built with proper page titles, headings, structured data, compressed images and fast hosting costs a little more up front but saves you rebuilding later. If you want to be found on Google, this is not the place to cut corners.
Running costs to budget for
The build is a one-time cost, but every website also has running costs:
- Domain name, renewed every year.
- Hosting, monthly or yearly, depending on the plan.
- SSL certificate, often free with good hosting.
- Maintenance: updates, backups and security fixes, done by you or your agency.
- Paid plugins, themes or apps, if the site uses them.
- Business email, if it is not included with hosting.
Ask every agency to list these separately so you can compare quotes fairly.
How to compare quotes
When quotes vary widely, put them side by side and check:
- Is the scope the same? Same number of pages, same features, same content work.
- Is mobile design included? It should be, for every page.
- Is basic SEO included? Titles, descriptions, headings, speed and a sitemap.
- Who owns the site? You should own the domain, the hosting account and the content.
- What happens after launch? A handover walkthrough, a support period and maintenance options.
- Can they show similar work? Ask for live sites, not just screenshots.
A cheap quote that leaves out content, SEO or mobile design often ends up costing more once you add them back.
So what should you budget?
Start from what the website needs to do for your business. A site that must bring in enquiries every week deserves more investment than one that simply confirms you exist. Write down your must-have pages and features, then ask for itemised quotes.

Frequently asked questions
Is a cheaper website a bad idea?
Not always. A simple, well-built site can work very well for a small business. The risk is when a low price comes from skipping mobile design, SEO basics or content, which are the parts that actually bring in enquiries.
Do I have to pay for a website every year?
The build is usually a one-time cost, but the domain and hosting renew every year, and most sites need some maintenance. Ask for these running costs in writing before you start.
Should I build my own website with a website builder?
Website builders can work for a very simple site if you have time to learn them. Businesses that rely on Google traffic or need custom features usually get better results from a professionally built site.
